Beaufort Court Wins Major Innovation Award A groundbreaking environmentally friendly building has won the prestigious Innovation of the Year Award for 2004. The Award, which was presented at a ceremony at the Hilton Hotel, Park Lane at the end of November, was recognition for the pioneering design of Beaufort Court in Hertfordshire the world’s first zero-emissions building. The building is the headquarters for Renewable Energy Systems (RES), one of the world’s leading wind energy companies. Beaufort Court, formerly a chicken farm supplying eggs to the nearby Ovaltine factory, is now the first zero emissions commercial development in the world. The building is entirely energy-self sufficient with energy and cooling produced on-site through a wind turbine. The energy supply from the turbine for heating and lighting is supplemented with solar panels as well as an energy-rich biomass crop, a heat store and groundwater cooling system. The building, designed by Studio E Architects with an interior by breathegroup, was officially opened in the summer of 2004. The innovative energy saving building design is complemented by an interior that met appropriately high environmental standards. breathegroup was responsible for all elements of the interior design and build including workplace mapping, space planning and the provision of furniture, partitions, flooring, wallcoverings and lighting. The Award follows earlier recognition by the British Council for Offices which gave the same building an award as Best Refurbishment in the South of England and South Wales for 2004.
